South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs (DHA) which operates as the custodian of the National Population Register (NPR) is mandated to ensure secure, efficient, and accessible services and documents to the citizens.

This includes the systematic maintenance of the NPR, management of birth, marriage, and death paper records, as well as identity documents.

To successfully achieve the required efficient standard, new advancements are to be implemented. The department of Home Affairs is currently recruiting young unemployed graduates for the project on the digitization of civic paper records.

This is because the department has over 350 million inactive and active paper records that need to be digitized. These documents date back to 1895 and most of the inactive records are civil registration historical records multiplied in a manuscript format that urgently need to be restored, preserved, and reconstructed.

The project aims to essentially convert all hard copy records to electronic, for better storage and easier handling.

It is believed that the digitization process will improve the service delivery by the department as records will be easily accessed.

While bettering the system, the DHA seeks to empower the youth through employment opportunities, and by doing so the department will be contributing to the employment goals and strategic priorities of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI).

The department has committed to hiring 10 000 unemployed graduates who will be taken in to digitize all the paper records.

The first phase of the recruitment process will start by hiring 2 000 unemployed graduates, the second phase will resume in October 2022 wherein 4 000 graduates will be taken in, and the last 4 000 candidates will be recruited in December 2022.

Thus, the Department of Home Affairs in collaboration with the Department of Labour invites youth between the ages of 18 – 35 to register on ESSA and apply for the inspiring opportunity. People with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Benefits of the Home Affairs Digitisation Project

The opportunity includes continuous learning and development of inventions that will improve the candidate’s skills for better performance, equipping them with professional skills for future employment and/or entrepreneurial opportunities.

The project will run from 1 November 2022 to 31 October 2025 and the successful candidates will be placed in the Department’s offices in Gauteng.
