SASSA R350 Reconsideration Payment Underway

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has been processing applications for the reconsideration of the Covid-19 Social Relief Distress Grant of R350.

They have been having a backlog that has affected the smooth running of the process and a delay in the issuing of payments.

They started making payments early this week and after months of dealing with appeals, verification, and reconsideration processes about seven hundred and fifty thousand (750 000) have been paid and they expect payments to increase to over a million by the end of the week.

The payments made this week are specifically for the reconsideration appeals from August to November 2021. Thus, applicants are advised to update their banking account details on the system to enable SASSA to easily make payments into their accounts.

Notifications to update the details have been sent to beneficiaries whose reconsideration appeal has been approved but, their banking details were outstanding.

The extension of the grant for another 12 months was announced in February 2022 and before the extension could be implemented the legislative framework was changed. This came after the lifting of the COVID-19 National State of Disaster.

The change came with various conditions with one being that the allocation was meant to address the issue around the inclusion and exclusion errors ensuring that they remain within the allocated budget of R44 billion.

To achieve this, SASSA had to implement a new way to test all the applications, including the submitted appeals. This means that SASSA had to implement a process that will be used to check people’s income in their bank accounts.

For all this, they had to partner with some of the main banks in the country which took time as they faced different challenges. Due to this, SASSA had a backlog for both the reconsideration appeals and the assessment of the new applications from April 2022.

On the brighter side, SASSA has started with the issuing of payments and has managed to clear some of the reconsideration appeals, also, the assessment of the new applications has begun.
